What is SYMBIO?
Powered by big data and artificial intelligence, SYMBIO shapes symbiotic business models with high profitability and sustainability replicable at the EU level to increase the market for bio-based products and provide a system to model, measure, and monitor symbiosis and its social, economic, and environmental impacts.

SYMBIO is a three-year funded project by the European Commission Horizon Europe programme in the context of the Symbiosis in the bio-based industrial ecosystems Call (Grant Agreement No 101135166).

How does it work?
The SYMBIO methodology is designed and validated in 12 pilot regions of 6 EU countries (Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain, Belgium) where industrial symbiosis is key to increasing the economic value of final products through resource sharing and zero-waste production models.

The SYMBIO methodology is structured in four phases:

  • Data-Hub Building. Scout and analyse resources, solutions, and market enablers to make them accessible to industries that trigger symbiotic activities close to the market.
  • Value-chain Design. Connect companies in circular value chains based on their specific materials flows and available technologies for material reprocessing, proven value change design, regulatory requirements and more.
  • Business Modelling. Develop a Circular Index and a reporting system to support companies in building a business model based on recycling, upcycling, and downcycling by-products and energy use in industrial symbiosis.
  • Business Deploy. Accelerate the development of business classes identified by measuring social, economic and environmental impact to maximise the support of companies, investors and regions

Why participate
This unique online event is designed to provide insights into SYMBIO’s progress, offer networking opportunities, and engage participants in meaningful discussions around industrial symbiosis, circularity, bio-based businesses, zero-waste production models, and AI applications, among others. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the project’s objectives, funding programme, outcomes, and the significant impact it aims to achieve across the European Union.

The event also aims to introduce to an intensive two-day technical workshop provides operational tools for modelling resilient bio-based businesses and their social, economic, and environmental impacts using free AI tools.
